Tobago’s top Indian Dancer, Sita Beepath, celebrated her 17 birthday on Sunday at her family’s residence at Mt Marie, Scarborough. Rayan Ramoutar, 39, the president of the Tobago Hindu Society (THS), lauded Beepath for her efforts in the field of dance. Ramoutar used the opportunity to announce to the large gathering of young and not-so-young people that the THS, in conjunction with the Mahatma Gandhi Institute for Cultural Co-operation, would be introducing classes in vocals and training on the tabla drums in Tobago before month’s end.
Ramoutar said the free classes would be open for all Tobagonians: “This is a golden opportunity for all, regardless of whatever differences we may have. It gives us the opportunity to expand our knowledge and offers an insight of Indian culture to young Tobagonians and what it can offer. This is a first for Tobago.”
The classes will be conducted at the Calder Hall Community Centre, Scarborough. The classes were negotiated by the THS and the Indian High Commission, through Malay Mishra, the Indian High Commissioner. Mishra has also offered five scholarships to Tobagonians, through the Tobago House of Assembly, for training under India’s ITEC programme at universities in India. Ramoutar said the THS plans to lobby for a scholarship for Sita, a student of the Harmon SDA High School, to study classical dance in India.
