Pakistan has a workforce of around 56 million people among a population of 168 million, according to Pakistan's official figures compiled by the Federal Bureau of Statistics. Every year thousands of labourers rally across the country demanding better wages and conditions to mark May Day.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Saturday announced a new labour policy which raised the minimum wage to Rs7,000 per month from Rs6,000. The prime minister said the new policy was pro-worker and aimed at improving their lot.
